Mountain bike trail associations by state

Almost every public mountain bike trail in the country was built and is maintained by volunteers. Not by a land agency, and not by an app — by a local club that negotiated the access, cut the trail, and shows up to fix it after every storm. 316 of those organizations across 50 states are listed below, with a link to each one. Each is tagged with the national body it belongs to, where it belongs to one.

If you ride somewhere regularly, the group that maintains it is probably on this page. Joining one costs less than a set of tires.

What it costs to ride, and why you cannot guess

The intuitive rule — clubs are free, resorts charge — is wrong often enough to strand you at a trailhead. Vermont is the clearest case, and all four of these are within an hour of each other:

  • Kingdom Trail Association is a non-profit, and it requires a membership or day pass. Its 100+ mile network crosses more than 100 private landowners’ properties; the pass is what keeps that permission in place.
  • Pine Hill Partnership is also a non-profit, and its 19 miles are free — they sit in a Rutland city park.
  • Victory Hill Trail Club charges nothing but requires a signed waiver at their office before you ride, and does not allow e-bikes without an exemption.
  • Burke Bike Park is a resort operation: 24 trails, 2,115 feet of lift-served vertical, $50 for a day ticket — and it adjoins the Kingdom Trails network, so one ride can cross both.

So access is tagged separately from affiliation on every entry below, and only where the organization states it on its own site. An untagged entry means we have not verified it — not that it is free. And note what the Kingdom Trails case shows: a trail network being well-maintained and welcoming does not make the land underneath it public. Our state trail pages show the ownership under every trail, which is the question a map should answer before you park.

About this list

Every entry is tagged with the bodies it belongs to, and every body publishes its own roster so riders can find their local group — which is exactly what this page does with it. We hold 220 IMBA Locals, 47 SORBA chapters, 37 NEMBA chapters, 34 VMBA chapters and 11 Evergreen chapters, captured August 2026 from Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, International Mountain Bicycling Association, New England Mountain Bike Association, Southern Off-Road Bicycle Association, Vermont Mountain Bike Association. Membership is not exclusive, and 36 groups here carry more than one tag — most SORBA chapters are IMBA Locals as well, which is why affiliation is a list rather than a single label.

The remaining 3 belong to no body we track, and that is not a lesser status. Pine Hill Partnership, the volunteer non-profit behind the 19 miles of singletrack in Rutland’s Pine Hill Park, is one of them — it stewards a city park, and no affiliation roster would ever surface it. Groups like that are the reason this page is not titled after any one organization.

We also list what each group actually maintains, where the organization publishes it — 130 named riding areas across 3 states so far. This is the part that is genuinely hard to get: riders search for the network — Kingdom Trails, Duthie Hill, Sandy Ridge — but trail networks are not recorded anywhere as named areas, so the only authority on what a riding area is called is the organization that built it. 118 of them trace to a group on this page; the rest are run by ski resorts, state parks or town parks departments.

One deliberate limit: several of these organizations present their trail maps and statistics through Trailforks widgets. We take the area name and which group maintains it — the organization’s own statement about its own work — and nothing else. No trail listings, counts or mileage are copied from those embeds.

Every state now has at least one entry. New England used to be blank here because IMBA lists almost nobody in it — those clubs charter under NEMBA, and Vermont’s under VMBA, both now included. The next gaps to close are the other state and regional alliances: MORC in Minnesota, CAMBA in Wisconsin, and the many strong clubs that answer to no alliance at all.
