Trail running maps · works offline
Offline trail running maps, wrist included
Download the trail system, leave the phone in the vest and run. Recording, live pace and elevation, the Apple Watch app and sharing your location with someone at home are all free.
Why a running map has to work offline
Runners cover ground quickly, which means reaching the unfamiliar junction sooner and with less patience for a map that is still loading. With the area downloaded, the network and its names are on the phone already, and a glance is enough to pick the right fork.
Recording is battery-aware and keeps going with the screen off. Distance, pace and elevation show live on the phone or on the Apple Watch, where you can start, pause and drop a waypoint without breaking stride. Live location sharing lets a partner follow a long run, and the free cell-coverage layer shows which parts of the loop will actually be able to send a position.
Not sure where to run? Discover answers “trails within 30 minutes’ drive” with the area you can really reach by road, then ranks what is inside it.

Questions about trail running maps
- Does recording work with the phone in a pocket or vest?
- Yes. Recording continues with the screen off, and it is tuned to the activity so a run is sampled differently from a paddle or a ski tour.
- Do I need the phone with me to use the watch?
- The Apple Watch app shows live stats and controls a recording from the wrist. See the FAQ and the download page for what the current release supports on its own.
- Is recording a paid feature?
- No. Recording, live stats and the watch app are free. Pro adds track replay and debrief, unlimited waypoints and analytical terrain.
