Waypoints, routes & your data
Dropping and editing a waypoint
- Tap Waypoint in the bottom bar. A banner says Tap the map to drop a waypoint.
- Tap the spot on the map.
- Give it a name. Notes, a folder, an icon and a colour are optional.
- Tap Save.
To change one, tap its pin on the map. From there you can edit any field, use Move pin and tap its new position, share it with friends, or delete it.
You can also add a waypoint at your current position from Menu → My Data, using the add-waypoint button at the top.
Note: The Free plan saves up to 10 waypoints; Pro is unlimited. Saving needs you to be signed in and online. On the web map, Move pin and sharing are not available, and deleting does not ask for confirmation.
Building a route
- Tap Route in the bottom bar.
- Tap the map to add points. In Snap mode the line follows the trail, road or river between them; in Straight mode it draws direct lines.
- Use Undo to remove the last point, Edit to move or delete a point, and Clear to start over.
- In the Route Builder panel, name the route and check its distance, elevation gain and loss, and elevation profile.
- Tap Save. You need at least two points.
Snap Target chooses what the line follows: Trail, Road or River. It starts on the one that suits your activity. For River, tap close to a river line.
In the phone app, Navigate builds turn-by-turn directions for the route.
Note: Building routes is free. Snapping, the elevation profile, Navigate and saving all need a connection, so plan routes before you lose signal. The web map has no Navigate button.
Finding and organising what you saved
Open Menu → My Data. Your routes, areas, measured distances and waypoints are listed by folder, with everything else under Ungrouped.
- Each item has buttons: Details, Open (show it on the map), Move (to a folder) and Delete. Routes also have Navigate in the phone app; areas and distances have Edit. Swipe the row of buttons sideways to see them all.
- Tap the new-folder button at the top to add a folder. Each folder can be shown or hidden on the map, renamed, or deleted.
- Deleting a folder does not delete what is in it — its items move to Ungrouped.
Note: Recorded tracks are not in My Data. Find them in Menu → Feed. The Free plan allows up to 5 folders; folders you create for routes and areas count toward that.
Exporting to GPX or KML
- Open Menu → My Data and tap Details on the item.
- Tap Export.
- Choose GPX or KML.
GPX is the common format for routes and waypoints. KML keeps areas as real polygons, which GPX cannot represent — choose KML for an area.
In the phone app the file opens in your phone’s share sheet, so you choose where it goes — Files, email, another app. On the web map it downloads through your browser.
Note: Trailmonger cannot import a GPX or KML file yet. If you need it, vote for it under Menu → Feature Roadmap.
Planning a trip
- Open Menu → Trips and tap Plan a trip.
- Set the activity, a name, and when you leave and come back.
- Add who is coming.
- Pick one of your saved routes (in the phone app you can also draw a new one), then your pace and hours on trail per day.
- Under If something goes wrong, add a contact, when you expect to be out, and when they should call for help.
- Tap Save trip.
Your next trip shows as a countdown on the map, with either Ready to go or what is still missing. Tap it to open the trip.
Trips are kept on your device and synced to your account when you are signed in, so you can read them with no signal.
