Offline maps

Downloading a map for offline use

Do this while you still have a good connection — ideally on Wi-Fi.

  1. Move and zoom the map until it shows the area you want. The download covers the map view you are looking at.
  2. Open the menu and tap Offline maps.
  3. Give it a name, or keep the suggested one.
  4. Choose the Map detail: Compact, Standard (good for most trips) or Detailed. More detail means a bigger download.
  5. Choose a Content preset — Standard outdoor, Water or Full outdoor — or switch individual layers on and off underneath.
  6. Check the Estimated download size, then tap Download this area.

Keep the app open until it finishes. The area then appears under On this device with its size and a status of Ready.

Note: To change the area, close the sheet, move the map, and open Offline maps again — there is no separate area picker.

Offline maps are free on every plan. You can also start from a trail: tap it, then Download Map.

Managing and removing offline maps

Open Menu → Offline maps. Everything you have saved is listed under On this device, with the total size at the top and each area’s size, date and layers.

  • To delete one area, tap Remove on it. Layers shared with your other areas stay until the last area that uses them is removed.
  • To delete everything, tap Remove all offline maps at the bottom.

When you are using a saved area, a small Offline data pill on the map shows which one and how old it is. Once the data is 30 days old the pill says Update; tapping it opens Offline maps.

A saved area never expires and the app never forces an update when you are out of signal.

What works offline, and what does not

  • Works offline: the map and layers you downloaded, your position, pasted-coordinate search, recording a track, and the favorites, waypoints and trips already on your device.
  • Needs a connection: search, weather, river flow, fire data, Discover, route snapping and turn-by-turn directions, and saving new waypoints, routes and shapes.
  • The Ocean map type cannot be saved. Switch to Satellite, Terrain or Street before downloading.
  • Max detail (offered on Satellite and Lidar) only fits small areas. If the app says the area is too large, zoom in or choose Detailed.
  • Property Parcels can be included in a download only with Pro, and only where parcel data exists.
  • If your phone is short on storage, the download stops and tells you how much it needs.

Note: Offline downloads need the phone app. A web browser cannot store a base map, so the web version’s Offline maps screen points you to the App Store and Google Play.

You do need to have signed in once on the device while online. After that the app opens without a connection.
