Getting started

Finding your way around the map

Almost everything in Trailmonger starts from the map. The controls sit in four places:

  • Top bar — the menu (three lines), the activity chip, the heart for your favorites, and search.
  • Bottom bar — Track, Waypoint, Route, Layers and Discover.
  • Lower right — the ruler and area measuring tools and the target button that centres the map on you. A compass appears here when the map is rotated; tap it to face north again.
  • Top right — small readout tiles: compass, elevation, scale, weather and regulations. Tap the Weather tile for the forecast.

For a guided version of this, open the menu, choose Help & Guides, and tap Start the tour. It points at each control in turn and takes about a minute.

Note: On the web map at a desktop width, the tools are a column of buttons down the right-hand side instead of a bottom bar, and there is no Track button — recording needs the phone app.

Choosing your activity

  1. Tap the activity chip in the top bar (it shows the icon of your current activity).
  2. Pick one: Hike, Walk, Run, Bike, Paddle, Alpine, Nordic, Hunt, Fish, Off-road or Camp.

The map then shows the trail types that suit that activity and turns on the layers that go with it — boat launches and rivers for Paddle, campgrounds for Camp, public land for Hunt, and so on. It also sets what the route builder snaps to: rivers for Paddle, roads for Off-road, trails for everything else.

If you have set the layers up exactly how you like them, tap Save current layers as Custom at the bottom of the same sheet. Picking Custom later restores that setup.

Note: Choosing an activity never turns on a Pro layer for a Free account.

Searching for a place, trail or address

Tap the magnifier in the top bar. Type at least three characters. Search covers:

  • Places — cities, counties, states and public lands. Choosing one frames the area and draws its outline.
  • Trails, rivers, campgrounds, waterfalls and other points of interest.
  • Street addresses and property addresses.
  • Coordinates — paste them in decimal or degrees-minutes-seconds. This works with no signal.

Before you type, search shows your saved places and what is near the centre of the map, with chips to narrow it: Trails, Camping, Water, Views, Trailheads and Facilities.

Where your device supports it, a microphone button lets you search by voice. If it says microphone access is off, enable it for Trailmonger in your phone’s Settings.

Note: Apart from pasted coordinates, search needs a connection.

Finding trails within a drive, ride or walk

  1. Tap Discover in the bottom bar.
  2. Choose an activity, or leave it on Any.
  3. Choose where to start: My location, Search place, or the current map view.
  4. Choose Drive, Bike or Walk, and a time from 15 to 90 minutes.
  5. Tap Find trails.

The results are the trails inside the area you can reach in that time. If you are signed in, Save discovery keeps the search under the Recent tab.

Note: Discover needs a connection.

Saving favorites

Tap the heart on a trail’s details, on a river’s flow sheet, or use Save this place on a property. You need to be signed in.

To see them, tap the heart in the top bar. Favorites are grouped by type — Rivers, Trails, POI, Ski Resorts and Saved Places — and then by state. Rivers show their current flow. Tap an item to jump to it; tap its heart to remove it.

Favorites are separate from waypoints and do not count toward the Free plan’s waypoint limit.
